Why Do I Feel the Need to Explain?
Here's a recent conversation I had:
“She is wearing pajamas because she is going to a Hanukah party later today.” I said to the nurse.
“Why do you think you need to explain why she is pajamas to me?” The nurse replied.
“Because I am a dad out with his daughter and I just thought you may be wondering why she is still in PJs.” I explained.
“Nope, I wasn’t even thinking about it. Some kids really don't like getting changed, so I don't even think about that.” The nurse answered.
As a stay-at-home-dad it appears I am battling internal demons more than I would like to admit. For instance, this past week I had a doctor’s appointment and like any other day my toddler daughter accompanied me. The day was very hectic and I was running a few minutes behind. Also, my daughter was in her pajamas as we went to the appointment. She was actually intentionally wearing pajamas because her preschool had a Hanukah party scheduled for that afternoon, and for some reason I felt the need to explain why my daughter was still in her pajamas late in the morning to a complete stranger. Is this something that moms do too? Do you think it is weird that I feel a need to explain myself to complete strangers?
